‘I adore Sanjay Dutt’

Ekta Kapoor on her favourite actor, her upcoming trip to Turkey and whether foreign locales help TV serials

Ekta Kapoor is nervous. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” she says. It’s to do with her movie
Shootout at Lokhandwala, that she has co-produced with Sanjay Gupta. “I want people to like the movie,” she says.
This film means a lot to her for various reasons. “Appu (director Apurva Lakhia) has worked very hard. Tusshar is playing a different role and he’s very good. In fact, initially he was sceptical but Sanjay, Apurva and everybody was very sure he should do it. Tusshar was then convinced. Shabbir too is making his debut in the movie. And the icing is Sanjay Dutt’s in it.”
So is Dutt her favourite actor? “Oh yes! I adore him.”
Talking about how Gupta and she came together for this film Ekta says, “I saw his movie Zinda. I thought it was one of the best movies I’d seen. I called him up and we met. I’d also read somewhere that he wanted to make a movie on this concept. Everything fell into place and we teamed up.”
Meanwhile she’s equally busy with her TV shows. In fact she’s set to take her Kasamh Se and Kayamath teams to Turkey.
Do foreign locales really help a show? “If the story requires a twist then it’s nice to have a new location. Foreign locales and visuals are different. It gives a good break from the usual.”
Incidentally, there’s a suspense element in Kayamath that will be shot there. “The mystique of Turkey will add to the mystery of the show. It helps to exploit the drama of a show,” she smiles
But a few years ago when she just stepped into the television industry did she envisage this? “It’s a big triumph. TV is growing everyday. Soon we will have niche programming for youngsters, urban and rural audiences etc,” she avers.
And finally, what about her eternal favourite character Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? “We will be taking a decision on that very soon,” she says. So, is Padmini Kolhapure coming in or will it be Gautami Gadgil? “You’ll know soon,” she signs off.

The sight of Kapoors entering the Anil Ambani’s party with Prachi Desai once again triggered the scuttlebutt. It is a common knowledge that Prachi is being mothered by Ekta Kapoor ever since she has been discovered by the soap queen. She did not remain mere employee of Balaji Productions but has become more of a family to Kapoors. The family seems to have accepted her presence and on several occasion they have been spotted rejoicing together. However her closeness to the family is still in question. It is undeniable fact that Ekta has been promoting her career so much so that she had also come under the scanner for having being involved in Prachi’s victorious end in one of the popular dance reality show. On the other hand her link-up stories with co-actor and Ekta’s brother Tusshar Kapoor has also been serving grit to rumour mills. As none of the other Balaji actors enjoyed this kind generosity from Ekta the latter can be the reason for their ever-growing proximity.

Take a look at the picture and figure it out yourself, doesn’t she look like one of the Kapoors!

Prachi Desai: Another TV star who made it big break in films, thanks to Ekta Kapoor. Popularly known as Bani from the prime time TV show Kasamh Se, Prachi landed herself a dream debut role opposite Farhan Akhtar in Rock On!!. The film and members of the cast scored big in the award ceremonies, but Prachi failed to cash in on the success of the film. Her next movie Life Partner came a cropper and no one seems to be talking about the Surti teenager anymore. Prachi has however, managed to bag herself another film produced by (who else but) Ekta — Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. It would be interesting to see how she holds her own against Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi and Kangna Ranaut. Oh yes, there’s news that she’s likely to do a film with Rajeev Khandelwal soon!
