Average Reading Speed

Reading can be for fun or for education. Developing the habit of reading in children develops a base to improve their knowledge and increases their affinity towards reading books. If children dislike reading then let them read their favourite books for 15 minutes every day. At this rate, at the end of the year they would have read about 18 average books. Books are filled with knowledge and reading is the means by which you can tap into the infinite resource of knowledge.

An average reading speed can range from 150- 300 words per minute, that isn't for everyone naturally. It also varies on the subject you are reading, and how experienced a reader you are. It's very important to understand what you are reading, as opposed to how fast you can read it. There are a few tips you can use if you really feel you need to improve your reading speed:

  1. Use a pen or your finger, to bring the eye to focus on the line, can help to increase your speed, and also help reduce re-reading. Using a finger or a pen as a guide can drastically improve your reading speed as our eyes tend to follow where our fingers point to.
  2. Re-reading is a habit that tends to slow you down. It is better to avoid it totally if possible or even rectify it if you have that problem.
  3. Talking about what you have read will give you a better understanding.
  4. Focussing on the key words shall help you to know the subject in just a few words.
  5. Reading speeds can be improved by reading several words at once. There are computer programmes that can help with this. You may even take up various courses that will teach you step-by-step on how to read blocks of words.
  6. Study the material you are going to read, look at things such as Chapters, Main Headings and anything else you might think relevant.
  7. Adjusting your reading speed as you go along, slow down when you need to understand a specific section, then speed up if you know (or don't need to know) other sections.
  8. Try and find somewhere quiet where you won't be disturbed. Trying to read in a disturbed environment tends to reduce your speed to some extent.
  9. Plenty of practice is required for improving your speed. You can check your reading speed before starting any course or gearing up efforts to increase it. Maintaining a record of your reading speeds over time can help to increase your enthusiasm.

There are some great web sites with tests to check your speed. Try to stick to your speed reading techniques consistently so that it shows up faster results. Leaving your efforts half way shall slacken your pace. Improving your reading skills can open up great avenues. It would mean saving lots of time and gaining more knowledge in a comparatively shorter time. Improve your reading speed and notice the impact it creates in your life.
