Child Speed Reading

Speed Reading is exactly what it says it is.....SPEED READING. In other words, it is the inculcated ability to read text, comprehend and assimilate it at an optimum speed, as compared to the normal speed we generally read text at. It is an essential skill in any environment where you have to take on large volumes of reading material, as would be in the case of extensive studies, and in a fast moving professional environment.

Key Factors

If you know what you want, vis a vis information from a given document, the idea is to be aware of it before you start reading. If just an outline and bare facts regarding the material are required, then Speed Reading is your tool. On the other hand, if the information needs complete assimilation, then perhaps, a slower approach to reading is required.
In terms of saving precious time, the most profit is gained by skimming over irrelevant and detailed matter in the text.

Technicalities

Even should you know the idea behind speed reading, a few technical clues would go a long way on the right way. Instead of reading block by block and reverting at times, you would retain what you read; just a few words a block.

Children And Speed Reading

It has been noticed that children tend to pick up speed reading at a speedier pace than most adults, probably because their minds are as yet uncolored by numerous distractions. Again, children adapt more quickly to adults to newer ideas, and adapt for their enhancement usually. Having a shorter attention span, children identify quicker with jumping onto new material faster than adults ever can. Hence Speed Reading has found more efficient results among children.

One of the most astounding phenomena has been the fact that Learning Disabled children, (those afflicted with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD and other learning disorders) pick up speed reading, and even retain their learnt matter, at times faster than most normal children.

Speed reading, when correctly taught, teaches children to separate the chaff from the grain, and enables them to tackle formidable studying tasks more speedily and more efficiently. Having undergone training on Speed Reading, kids who were struggling with 200 words a minute, are able to master over 2,000 words or even more a minute.

Speed Reading among children can be wisely fostered with the correct teaching methods. Here attention and focus to key words is important, as they are the foundation speed reading is built on.
Mentally scanning material for future use is another method that stands in good stead for speed reading. Again focusing on strong focal points in the material helps to retain matter better.

Last, reading to small children inculcates in them a habit of reading. That in turn fosters an avid curiosity to read and learn more and more. As knowledge needs expand for speed reading steps in. A speed reader, especially a child, will learn early in life where to look and for what. All this done at a very spiffy pace is all the better.

So catch 'em young, and they shall learn.
