Fast Reading Technique
In present times there is hardly any field of work, which does not require regular update of intellectual knowledge. The more you want to keep yourself updated with the latest trends and technologies the more you need to read. And the faster your speed of reading the more you will be able to read with in the same time frame.
There are fast reading techniques with the help of which you can increase your reading speed. These fast reading techniques are so effective that the difference can be in many folds. For example it is found that the speed of an average reader is said to be between 250 and 350 words per minute, where as after using the fast reading techniques you can achieve a speed of up to 1000 words per minute or ever higher. That is not all. These techniques will also help you improve your comprehension level form an average person's 60% to an amazing 85%.
The skill of reading fast is useful to possess even if you are not required to read regularly. However, before actually learning and implementing the fast reading techniques we should try to understand the reasons behind slow reading and improve upon those factors. A few possible reasons of reading slow can be (a) include silent speech while reading (b) Knowingly or unknowingly skip to previous lines due to external interruption or lack of concentration.
After having got rid of the negative reasons for slow reading you can start learning fast reading techniques. Off course a good vocabulary and an average reading speed is a must.
To begin with you first need to understand that your eyes, while scanning thru the text, can read a group of words in a set. These can be called blocks. So you should consciously try to read the text in blocks instead of reading word by word. Then try to increase the size of the block. It's a question of doing it time and again.
Then there is the amount of time spent on every block. This needs to be reduced with an extra bit of concentration. This extra concentration is required only during the initial practice. Actually it is mutual. The lesser time you spend on a block the more you are able to concentrate and vise-versa. Now since you are able to concentrate more skipping back to previous lines will not happen. To make sure further and avoid skipping back, use a pointer.
Avoid lip movement while reading. Since an average speaker can speak only 280 words per minute your reading speed cannot go beyond that with lip movement with or without voice. As it is reading in blocks is not possible with lip movement. Wider the eye span, better the speed.
These do it yourself tips may not always be enough to bring out your maximum potential of reading fast. It is advisable to undergo a professional course on fast reading technique as they will be able to suggest how to implement each step and when. Various courses are available online and off-line.
